Abstinence

What is abstinence?

Abstinence is the choice not to have sex or have sexual contact with others. This typically means no vaginal, anal, or oral sex. It is important that you decide what your boundaries are and inform your partners of your decision. Is snuggling okay if it does not lead to sex? How do you feel about making out? Your boundaries are up to you and you have the right to enforce those boundaries.

True Fact - Teens often face a lot of pressure to have sex. In Pueblo County, 56% of students are not sexually active. So, if this is you, don't worry - not every teen has sex. It is your body and you have the right to decide when to have sex and with whom.

How do I set boundaries for sex?

Consider what makes you feel comfortable and uncomfortable. How do you feel about holding hands? Kissing? Making out? Touching? Really think about what you would be okay with and then tell your partner. You also may not know what your boundaries are until you are in the moment. Maybe you thought you would be okay with touching, but you get to that point and think, "Oh no! I feel super uncomfortable and want to stop." That is okay. You have the right to stop a sexual encounter at any point if you feel uncomfortable. Just pay attention to how you feel and respect your boundaries as well as your partner's boundaries. Remember, they have the right to say no and stop the situation if they want to, also. Just as it is your body, they have a right to their body also. Respect each other's wishes.
